Convention Center Utilization Statistics: Events, Attendance, Room Nights, and Economic Impact

Convention center utilization statistics covering event volume, attendance, hotel room nights, revenue, economic impact, and demand recovery.

Convention center utilization is measured through more than occupied floor space. Event counts, days in use, attendance, hotel room nights, revenue, and economic impact together show how heavily a facility and its surrounding destination are being used. The figures below cover convention centers in Savannah, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Quebec City, Overland Park, and Denver across 2020–2025.

Annual event volume and facility use

Reported event counts provide a direct view of how often a convention center calendar is activated. In 2023, the Savannah Convention Center hosted 162 events and was in use for 334 days, according to the Savannah Convention Center Annual Report 2023. The two measures describe different aspects of utilization: the first counts events, while the second captures the number of days the facility was in use.

Several other centers also reported substantial event calendars for 2023. The 2023 Annual Report says the Minneapolis Convention Center hosted 205 conventions, trade shows, and sporting events. The Overland Park Convention Center 2023 Annual Report reports 198 events, while the Pennsylvania Convention Center and PHLCVB 2023 report records 144 total events.

The Quebec City Convention Centre reported 193 events during its 2023–2024 period in “2023-2024: An Outstanding Year”. Because this is a 2023–2024 reporting period rather than a calendar-year total, it should be read separately from the 2023 figures above.

Convention centerMeasurement periodReported event activity
Savannah2023162 events; 334 days in use
Minneapolis2023205 events
Pennsylvania2023144 total events
Overland Park2023198 events
Quebec City2023–2024193 events

For event planners, these figures illustrate why utilization should not be reduced to a single occupancy percentage. A center can be active on many days through a mix of conventions, trade shows, sporting events, and other programs. The event type, duration, and room configuration determine how much usable capacity each booking consumes.

Attendance throughput

Attendance measures the people moving through a facility over the reporting period. Savannah recorded 197,207 attendees in 2023, according to its Annual Report 2023. Minneapolis reported nearly 713,000 people attending events in 2023 in its 2023 Annual Report. The Pennsylvania Convention Center welcomed more than 860,000 attendees during 2023, according to the published 2023 annual-report announcement.

Other reported totals show the range of throughput among facilities and reporting periods. The Quebec City Convention Centre welcomed more than 220,000 visitors in 2023–2024, as reported in “2023-2024: An Outstanding Year”. Overland Park recorded 310,315 attendees in 2023, according to its 2023 Annual Report.

The Colorado Convention Center data published by Visit Denver shows a later increase in group attendance: 208,441 in 2023, 222,253 in 2024, and 276,536 in 2025. These are reported group-attendance figures for the Colorado Convention Center and should not be treated as a universal industry benchmark.

Attendance is especially useful when reviewed alongside event volume. It can identify a calendar composed of many smaller programs, a smaller number of very large events, or a blend of both. It also helps planners think about registration throughput, crowd movement, exhibit-floor density, and peak staffing requirements.

Room-night demand

Hotel room nights connect convention-center use with destination demand. Savannah’s 2023 activity generated more than 170,000 local hotel room nights, according to the Savannah Convention Center Annual Report 2023. Philadelphia events booked through the PHLCVB generated 563,400 hotel room nights in 2023, according to the 2023 annual-report announcement.

Minneapolis provides event-level examples. The USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships produced 24,500 hotel room nights in 2023, and five major volleyball tournaments using the Minneapolis Convention Center produced more than 56,000 hotel room nights, according to the 2023 Annual Report.

Colorado’s reported room-night totals rose with group attendance. Visit Denver reports 356,052 hotel room nights for Colorado Convention Center groups in 2023, 415,869 in 2024, and 531,461 in 2025 in its Colorado Convention Center Data and Statistics. For comparison, the same source reports 76,131 room nights in 2020, 117,638 in 2021, and 311,229 in 2022.

Room nights are a practical utilization signal for event planning because they reveal demand beyond the building itself. A program that fills exhibit halls but produces limited overnight stays has a different destination effect from a multi-day event drawing attendees from outside the local market.

Revenue and economic impact

Facility financial results and destination economic impact are related but distinct measures. Savannah reported $9,569,969 in total revenue and $9,791,737 in total expenses in 2023, according to its Annual Report 2023. The same report says the center contributed to $13.5 million in annual state and local tax revenue in 2023 and reported more than $1.4 billion in cumulative Georgia tourism and hospitality economic impact over less than 10 years as of 2023.

Savannah also reported that its expansion was expected to generate $200.9 million in economic impact from doubled space and booked events. This is an expectation tied to the expansion and booked events, rather than a measured 2023 result, so it should be interpreted as a forecast or projection.

Overland Park reported $14,308,125 in total revenue, $13,058,370 in total expenses, and $1,249,755 in total income in 2023. Its 2023 Annual Report also records $38,163,420 in total event impact.

Philadelphia events booked through the PHLCVB generated more than $380 million in economic impact in 2023, according to the published 2023 report. Quebec City recorded $11 million in event revenue and an estimated $165 million in regional economic spin-offs during 2023–2024, according to “2023-2024: An Outstanding Year”. The Quebec City figure is explicitly an estimate for regional spin-offs.

For Colorado Convention Center groups, Visit Denver reports $504,905,270 in economic impact in 2023. The differing scopes of these measurements matter: some figures describe facility revenue or income, while others describe broader event impact, taxes, or regional spillovers.

Large events and peak demand

Annual totals can conceal short periods of intense use. Minneapolis reported several high-attendance examples in 2023. The USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships drew 48,000 attendees and used nearly 60 courts inside the convention center. The Northern Lights Qualifier drew 52,413 people, while the Ace of Clubs Volleyball Festival drew 7,500.

Other events recorded in the Minneapolis 2023 Annual Report included the Twin Cities River Rumble with 4,500 people and the January Thaw volleyball tournament with 2,000 people. The NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series brought more than 6,000 attendees and 225 teams to Minneapolis in 2023.

These examples show why peak-demand planning is a separate question from annual utilization. A center may report hundreds of events over a year, yet a single tournament can require unusually large floor plans, repeated session turnover, extensive registration capacity, and concentrated hotel demand. The nearly 60 courts used by the volleyball championship are a concrete example of how one event can transform the operational layout of a facility.

Denver’s recovery path

The Colorado Convention Center statistics from Visit Denver provide a year-by-year view of utilization recovery and subsequent growth. In 2020, Colorado Convention Center groups totaled 12, recorded 65,500 attendees, and generated 76,131 hotel room nights. In 2021, groups totaled 26, attendance reached 78,108, and room nights reached 117,638.

The 2022 figures show a larger step up: 60 groups, 154,579 attendees, and 311,229 hotel room nights. The same source reports 208,441 attendees and 356,052 room nights for 2023, followed by 222,253 attendees and 415,869 room nights in 2024. In 2025, groups recorded 276,536 attendees and generated 531,461 hotel room nights.

2025—276,536531,461

The table keeps the source’s reported measures together without filling in group counts that were not supplied for 2023–2025. For planners assessing utilization, the sequence demonstrates how attendance and hotel demand can move through several stages: a low-volume period, an initial return of groups, a stronger rebound, and higher reported demand in later years. These are Colorado Convention Center figures for the stated years, not a forecast for other convention destinations.
